Overview

This programme explains how disabled people view themselves and how they want others to see them.  Understanding this will empower the participants to deal confidently and effectively with disabled people in any setting, both work and social.

Who Should Take This Course
Anyone who is likely to deal with disabled people.  This could include
  • Customer facing staff
  • Staff involved in HR/Recruitment
  • Managers dealing with disabled employees
  • Staff dealing with disabled colleagues

Learning Objectives

After successfully completing this course participants will be able to:
  • Understand the nature of disability as a social issue and understand the difference between the Medical and Social models of disability.
  • Understand the difference between "Disability" and "Impairment" and begin to consider the different barriers faced by people with different impairments.
  • Feel confident about the using the Appropriate Language in the context of disability.
  • Have a basic understanding of the Disability Discrimination Act.
  • Understand Disability Etiquette and feel confident when dealing with disabled people.
